A Better World By Design

A Better World By Design

This looks like an interesting conference that is being hosted at Brown University in Providence, RI in just a few weeks. The conference is completely student-run and features a number of fabulous speakers. So, if you happen to be in the Northeast, it could be a great way to spend a weekend! Here’s the blurb from one of the organizers:

You’re invited to the A Better World by Design conference! This will be our seventh year hosting our student-run conference on environmentally and socially conscious design, and we would love for you to be a part of it. Each fall, Better World by Design brings together over 1,000 entrepreneurs, academics, creatives, inventors, and activists to propose interdisciplinary, design-oriented solutions to the world’s biggest problems. We have a great line-up of speakers including Sarah Williams from MIT’s Civic Data Design Lab, Brian House who will speak about experimental geography, and Melissa Mongiat from Montreal’s Daily Tous Les Jours to speak about interactive cities. We’ll also have a bunch of hands-on workshops throughout the weekend including a ‘Draw on Everything’ session with Shantell Martin, a smart textiles workshop with Marina Toeters, and an experiential workshop with philosophy professor Brian Glenney in which attendees will be hearing colors.

The theme for this year’s conference is Wayfinding. Wayfinding is about orientation. It’s about developing and reading signs, navigating new terrain, and processing the unfamiliar. It encompasses understandings of both where you are and where you are going—individually, and in relation to your community. The 2014 conference will challenge attendees to create a more comprehensive understanding of our relationships to spaces, problems, and experiences.

We wish to engage as many students as possible to share the opportunities and excitement that will be coming to Brown and RISD this year. We sincerely hope that you can help spread the word about this dynamic community and that you, faculty, and students will attend this year’s conference!

Join us September 19-21st, in Providence, Rhode Island. For more information about registration, visit abetterworldbydesign.com/register.

We look forward to seeing you at A Better World by Design’s 2014 Conference!
